Aquarium Maintenance

The Little Fish Store Stratford wants to ensure you have all the resources and information you need whether you’re an experienced hobbyist or completely new to this, we’re here to help. We want to make sure the fish we sell have the best care possible. Below is some valuable information about aquarium maintenance as well as the nitrogen cycle – a crucial factor in the health of your fish.

Cleaning:

Your aquarium water should be changed every 2 weeks, to a maximum removal of 25% of the water. A gravel vacuum will ensure you get debris from crevices of the substrate and bottom of your tank. All replacement water should be treated with a water conditioner (to remove chlorine) before being added back into the tank. The decorations in your tank should be cleaned every few months with a sponge and hot water. A small amount of dish soap can be used for stubborn grime, ensure the décor is rinsed thoroughly and no soapy solution is left before returning to the tank.

Algae Blooms:

There are several reasons you could be experiencing a build-up of algae on your aquarium walls and surfaces, high nitrates being one of them. This can be solved with water changes and an addition of live plants. Prolonged light exposure can also trigger algae blooms. We suggest keeping your aquariums away from windows and only keeping the tank light on for a maximum of 6-8 hours, a blackout period of no light will help diminish algae that is growing.

Filter Cleaning:

When cleaning your filter, don’t throw away all filter cartridges or clean with tap water. Only ever rinse your filter inserts or sponge filter with aquarium water, as the chlorine from the tap will kill off the healthy bacteria living in your filter. Replacing filter inserts all at once will cause your tanks cycle to crash and harm your fish.

Feeding:

Contrary to popular belief, fish require more than just a diet of flakes to live a healthy and nutrient rich life. Vegetation, frozen live, and live food are all great additions to your aquatic pets diet. Varied diets contribute to healthy immune systems, which will lead to disease prevention and longevity of your fish.

The Nitrogen Cycle

The Nitrogen Cycle Explained:

The term “cycling a tank” refers to the nitrogen cycle as it takes place within your aquarium. Whether you’re just starting out, or an experienced hobbyist, it is important to understand. The nitrogen cycle is an integral part of the health of your aquarium and its inhabitants.

Ultimately, it protects your fish from harmful waste as it breaks down in your water. The nitrogen cycle occurs in stages, throughout which is converts the waste into safer substances, and is key to keeping your fish alive and thriving. This is why we suggest your aquarium be filtered, even if it’s small, because that’s where the healthy bacteria live!

We offer free water testing if you’re feeling unsure or just starting out, we also carry many products and solutions that can help start or fix a cycling tank. Feel free to come in and discuss any of this with our educated staff!

The stages:

1.The fish and excess food produce waste; this turns into ammonia. (Ammonia is extremely toxic to fish and can burn their gills.)

2. The nitrifying bacteria, Nitrosomonas, consumes the ammonia and converts it into nitrites. (Nitrites are still very toxic to fish)

3. The nitrifying bacteria, Nitrobacter, consumes the nitrites and converts them into nitrates. (Nitrates are mildly toxic to fish, in high doses)

4. Nitrates are removed from the water through regular aquarium maintenance and water changes. Live plants consume nitrates and can greatly reduce their presence in your aquarium as well.
