Betta Fish Care
Yes, The Little Fish Store sells betta fish in Stratford! Before we send you home with your new betta, we want to make sure you know exactly what a betta requires for proper care. Betta fish are beautiful, unique and often sold as “easy first pets”. The truth is, betta fish need a lot more love than they’re commonly given!
The Little Fish Store has a great selection of betta fish for sale in Stratford. And because we truly believe in the ethical treatment of all living things, you’ll be pleased to see that the bettas we have for sale are not kept in small containers to maximize profits like “the big guys”. We are firm believers that each fish has its own unique characteristics and personality, which you will be able to see in the tanks on our betta wall. No sad fish in cups in our fish store!
We would like to inspire change within the freshwater fish industry and change the standard of betta care and resale. That is why you will only see happy, thriving, bettas at The Little Fish Store!
To ensure the betta fish we sell continue to have a happy life, The Little Fish Store requires you have a fish tank with a minimum size of 1.5-gallons before purchasing and homing our betta fish. However, we encourage larger than 1.5-gallons. The truth is, anything smaller than 1.5-gallons is not a suitable space for a betta to live and is actually inhumane! That would be the human equivalent of living inside of a closet. We want to ensure the bettas we offer for sale continue to live a happy life.
Betta Facts
- Bettas are native to Asia, where they live in the slow-moving waters of marshes and streams.
- Bettas are labyrinth fish, meaning that they breathe air from the waters surface and not through their gills like most fish do. It is important to have low flow filters for this reason.
- Betta fish are diurnal, meaning that they are active during the day and sleep at night. Just like you, they require darkness to get a good night’s rest.
- Studies have shown that Bettas can recognize their human guardians and will swim about excitedly when you approach their tank.
- Depending on temperament, your Betta can thrive singly in community tanks with other fish such as guppies, cory’s, and khuli loaches. Ghost shrimp and snails also make good tank-mates.
Bettas are very curious and will inspect new decorations within their environment, we suggest occasionally rearranging their homes to keep them mentally stimulated. Betta fish can experience frustration and depression. While most fish will prefer to be in a tank on their own, they still require an enriching environment. Plants, caves and room to explore are among the things that will prevent boredom in your Betta friend.
